3D drapes everything over real terrain; drag with right-mouse / two fingers to tilt and rotate. 2D is a flat top-down map — lighter on battery and steadier for navigation. All layers work in both.
Imhof is our own shading: multidirectional light, ridge/valley accents, warm highlights and cool shadows. Multidir is the renderer's built-in hillshade. The azimuth / altitude sliders (advanced) move the sun — a low sun (20–35°) models terrain best.
Coloured bands of steepness, computed live from the elevation model (CalTopo-compatible palette):
Slope reads shallower when zoomed out — coarse pixels average away steep ground. Judge slopes zoomed in, and never let a map replace judgment in terrain.
Which way slopes face: warm orange = south (sun, early melt), blue = north (cold, holds snow). Stronger colour = steeper ground.
Boundaries of national and natural parks (Apuseni, Retezat, Domogled…), from OpenStreetMap. Informational only — motorised access in Romanian protected areas is generally restricted and rules vary by zone; verify current local regulations before riding or driving off-road.
Draw a line on the map, or load a GPX track (button or drag&drop) to get distance, climb, and grade-coloured profile. The gain deadband (advanced) ignores elevation wiggles smaller than the threshold — that's why our climb numbers are lower and more honest than a raw GPS sum.
With a GPX loaded, Follow keeps the map on your live position and shows distance done, distance and climb remaining, and how far you are off the track — with an alert colour beyond 50 m.
Your position is used only to move the marker on your screen. It is never sent anywhere.
